New research suggests that thousands of cities worldwide could generate renewable energy and conserve water by using solar panels floating atop water reservoirs. These solar arrays, called floatovoltaics, work similarly to land-based solar panels but are mounted on rafts instead of on the ground. The technology has not yet been widely deployed and only generated less than 1% of the world’s land-based solar farms in 2020.
However, a study published in Nature Sustainability shows that cities could tap into the potential of this emerging technology to power themselves entirely with solar energy.
