While growing up in Delhi in the 1960s, I remember summer was a season we looked forward to. Cycling home from school at mid-day, you rode into a compound with a low rectangular thick-walled bungalow, its deep verandah shaded by a jaffrey of creepers. The interior was cooled by puffs of khus scented air and darkened by reed-chicks drawn against the harsh sunlight. At night the roof was sprayed with water before the beds were laid out in a line and enclosed in mosquito nets.
