It seems that barely a month goes by without a new study warning us that freak weather events are set to become the “new normal”.

In February, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned in a new report that the world is already facing “unavoidable climate hazards” over the next two decades, including heatwaves, droughts and floods.

The same report also predicted that water-related risks, like flooding and heavy rainfall, will increase with every degree of global warming, with around 700 million people currently living in regions where rainfall is on the rise.

The growing risk that climate change brings means cities and urban areas will have to adapt with new infrastructure that can withstand the pressures of such weather events.
