Stockholm’s aging electricity infrastructure has been unable to keep up with surging demand — especially as it moves toward becoming fossil-fuel free by 2040. So it’s drilling an enormous tunnel to make way for new powerlines that will help supply more electricity to the Swedish capital.
A massive drilling machine named Elektra is tunneling beneath Stockholm, 200 feet below the streets. The tunnel it’s creating will allow the city to upgrade its aging electricity infrastructure, facilitating a complete transition to green energy. The new cables, expected to be completed in 2028, will not only keep power running on the coldest days of the year but could finally enable the city to fully go green.
